Companions of Limitas: Ruin Guide
A downloadable game
The Fall, by Limitas: Nothing lasts forever. Every life ends. Every dynasty falls. And every empire crumbles. Just as the dust of our bodies returns to the soil upon death, nature reclaims the city’s stones and wood as its own. Vines tangle the walls and shroud the door ways. Trees spring up between cobbles, splitting the ground. The rains smooth the edifice and icon. Ploughed fields and canals bloom with wild flowers. Wild beasts make dens in the dwellings of kings, and long lines of knowledge and tradition end in quiet darkness. People fall to disaster, or flee to another way of life. Thus is the fate of all civilisations.
However, in this world, not all civilisations fall so simply or gracefully. For this world has given birth to vast and terrible empires of magic and mystery; and every grand climb demands a grand fall. These fallen cities are not simply reclaimed by nature, but consumed by it, like a leech drinking ill blood. The very stones of the world seem to pull these cities down into the darkness. Whole neighbourhoods are consumed; left as the scant chambers of great underground labyrinths. In place of beasts and scavengers, the twisted war machines and monsters of ages past stalk these sinking halls. No wolves or jackals here, instead the bones of fallen warriors rise again to continue their endless conquest of nothing. No vulture or hyena, instead the slain of this world are picked clean by chimeric beasts forged of blood and of magic. No owls can be heard crying here, instead ancient guardians of stone keep silent vigil over the tomb of their lost world.
This process of ruin is like a force of the world. Pulling the great and terrible works of the world within itself and decomposing them. Great palaces are turned into spiralling halls to nowhere. Great pits open up, places of rest and work fill with molten stone, and temples are crushed by the weight of the world.
It is not only the physical which gets consumed the forces of ruin, but knowledge as well. As the aeons pass, lost texts and dead languages sink into the dark earth; decomposed into one lost ruinous tongue. Just as all layers of aeons pile on top of each other, lost secrets and techniques accumulate in the dark. Awaiting the light of knowledge.
However, some secrets may be best left in the dark. Consider the magic which warps beasts and humans alike against their will. Consider the great weapons of conquest left in the darkness of ruin. Shall they be brandished again? And against who? These questions can only be answered by those who brave the ruins of the lost worlds, and come back with treasures terrific and terrible indeed. Like I once did, when I was a child standing before the dark cave’s mouth.
