The Nature of the Gods, as revealed by Limitas: Hello, firstly I’d like the comment on the irony that the book with my stat block in it has Eshta the Priestess on the cover. Mean while the book that had her stat block in it had me on the cover. “You're a red haired girl? I thought you were a green haired man?” I hear you say, and that question cuts right to the point. I can be anything, provided there’s a good story attached. That is the true nature of the Gods.
We are what ever living beings invest themselves in; believe in, repeat, and retell. We are the subjects of your narratives. This is why in the dense forests of the east I am a courageous hunter, and in the dense cities of the west I am a cunning thief. Different stories for different places. These narratives give us form, and the attention you pay these narratives give us sustenance. Everything else is just a mood setter. Gods who go without attention cease to be. They fade into the ruins of their crumbled temples and overgrown idols. Some fade gracefully, while others claw at existence, and become parasites on reality.
Of course, now that you know how a God is maintained, and how they cease, you must know how they come to be. Let us use the example of a pair of brothers, and also ponder why Bakra is king in the north Falmas, and Bazz in the south. In the northern Falmas, where water pours down from the mountains, the people were in awe of this flowing power. The floods dictated the peoples lives; where they built and how they grew. And these people would see the water buffalo fording rivers un deterred. This show of force and unity awed them, and they came to exalt the cow for its power over water, and when they began to build canals and palaces, those who lived in palaces saw themselves as cow like. And so the bull became a king. Far to the south, where the sun beats down strong, the people looked in awe to the sky. To the sun, which had the power to nourish and burn, to reveal and blind. And in the sky they saw the falcon, gracefully crossing the suns kingdom. And so the falcon became the sun, and the sun became a king, as to hold such a power would be kingly indeed. And so you see reader that need creates reverence, and reverences creates justification. And so a bird and bovine become Gods, and when two narratives meet they become dualling brothers, as we are always made in your image, after a fashion.
And lastly, while I have exalted human power of creation, do not forget the limitations of humans to resist their own narratives. Additionally, do not be so arrogant to think only humans can dream of gods. Their are gods of death, chaos, and ice which predate man. And there are gods of animals; salmon gods who are exalted as they swim upstream to spawn, and cat gods prayed to for good hunts. There are even gods of magnets, whose worshippers kneel prostrate towards their great gods in the north and south. So take heed, and keep holy the sites and times of worship. For we are watching.
